How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Session
Family portraits are more than just pictures—they’re a celebration of your people, your story, and the love you share. And while planning for a session can feel overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be!
At Blessed Beyond Belief Photography, I work with families all over San Luis Obispo & Santa Barbara County (and beyond!) to create relaxed, meaningful, joy-filled photo sessions. With a little preparation, you’ll feel confident walking into your session—and walk away with images you’ll treasure for years.
1. Choose the Right Time of Day
The most beautiful natural light happens during golden hour—just after sunrise or just before sunset. It’s soft, flattering, and makes your photos glow. If your kiddos are early risers or need naps, I’ll help you find a time that works for both great light and happy moods.
2. Plan Your Outfits Early
Coordinated doesn’t mean matching! Stick to a color palette (neutrals, pastels, or earthy tones work great) and avoid logos, neon, or busy patterns.
Style tips:
Layer pieces like cardigans, scarves, or vests.
Add texture with denim, linen, or knits.
Choose clothing that feels comfortable and confident.

3. Prep the Kids (and Keep it Fun!)
The best family sessions happen when the kids are relaxed and having fun. Set the tone by treating this like a special adventure—not a high-pressure event.
Bring:
Small, non-messy snacks
Water bottles
A favorite toy or comfort item (just in case!)
Pro tip: Save any treats or rewards for after the session.
4. Don’t Worry About Perfection
Some of the most meaningful photos happen in-between the “posed” ones. A spontaneous laugh, a quick cuddle, a goofy dance—these are the moments you’ll remember.
Let go of trying to be “perfect.” Let your love and connection lead the way—I’ll take care of the rest.
5. Get the Whole Family Involved
When everyone feels included in the process, the session feels more natural. Let your partner help with location planning or your child choose a hair bow or shoes. Or have your pup join the family session. They’ll definitely bring everyone’s smile out.
A little buy-in goes a long way!
6. Consider Hair & Makeup
If you want a confidence boost (especially for moms), consider booking professional hair and makeup. It can make a huge difference in how you feel—and how that confidence shines in your photos.
